Start with what you know

When a decision feels tangled, describe the situation without interpreting it. What happened? What has been said? What is still unknown? Separating facts from assumptions gives the conversation a clearer starting point.

Ask what else could be true

An interpretation can become so familiar that it feels like the only explanation. Try asking what another person might see differently. You don’t have to agree with that perspective to learn from it.

Make the question useful

Before the next conversation, ask yourself: What do I need to understand? What am I avoiding? What would help us choose a next step? Let curiosity do some of the work.
